CDCP quick check

Not sure where you stand with CDCP?

Answer a question or two to see your next step. It takes about 30 seconds.

Do you have a CDCP member card or a welcome letter from Sun Life?

This is a quick guide, not an official eligibility decision. The Government of Canada decides who qualifies for CDCP.

What CDCP covers

Everyday dental care, covered by the plan

CDCP helps pay for a wide range of dental care. Here is what it covers, in plain language.

  • Check-ups and exams

Regular check-ups, and an exam when something hurts.

  • Cleanings

Scaling and polishing to remove plaque and tartar.

  • X-rays

Dental x-rays to help find problems early.

  • Fillings

Repairing cavities and chipped or broken teeth.

  • Root canals

Treating an infected or painful tooth so it can be saved.

  • Gum treatment

Deep cleaning and care for gum disease.

  • Extractions

Removing teeth that cannot be saved, including oral surgery.

  • Dentures

    Dentures to replace missing teeth.

  • Crowns

Covering and protecting a weak or damaged tooth.

  • Fluoride and sealants

Extra protection against cavities, often for children.

  • Sedation

Options to help you stay calm and comfortable, when needed.

Some services, such as crowns and dentures, need approval from the plan before treatment (preauthorization). We send that request to Sun Life for you. Braces are not currently available under CDCP. Coverage is set by the plan and can change; see canada.ca/dental for details.

What you pay

Your share depends on your family income

CDCP pays a set fee for each covered service. Depending on your adjusted family net income, you may pay part of that fee. This is called a co-payment.

Family incomeUnder $70,000

0%

co-payment

CDCP pays 100% of its set fee

Family income$70,000 – $79,999

40%

co-payment

CDCP pays 60% of its set fee

Family income$80,000 – $89,999

60%

co-payment

CDCP pays 40% of its set fee

Example: if the CDCP fee for a service is $100 and your co-payment is 40%, you pay $40 and CDCP pays $60.

A clear estimate before any treatment

Sometimes a service is not covered, or a clinic's fee is higher than the CDCP fee. Before we start any treatment, we review your coverage and give you a clear estimate of any out-of-pocket cost, so you can decide with all the facts.

FAQ

CDCP questions, answered

Do you accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?

Yes. Oak & Pearl Dental accepts CDCP and bills Sun Life, the company that runs the plan, directly. Please bring your CDCP member card or member ID to your visit.

Will I have to pay anything?

It depends on your co-payment level and your treatment. CDCP pays a set fee for each covered service, and depending on your adjusted family net income you pay 0%, 40% or 60% of that fee. If a service is not covered, or our fee is higher than the CDCP fee, there may be an extra cost. Before any treatment, we review your coverage and give you a clear estimate.

Do I have to pay up front and claim it back?

No. CDCP pays dental offices directly, so there is no claim for you to send. At your visit you only pay your own share, if you have one.

I applied but don't have my card yet. Can I book?

Yes, you can request an appointment now. CDCP only pays for care on or after the coverage start date in your Sun Life welcome package, so we will book your visit for that date or later.

Can my children use CDCP here?

Yes. Children who are enrolled in CDCP can be seen at our clinic. Each family member has their own coverage, so let us know who is coming and we will help you book.

Does CDCP cover dentures?

Yes. CDCP covers dentures. Some dentures need approval from the plan before treatment (called preauthorization), and we send that request to Sun Life for you.

Does CDCP cover braces?

Not at this time. Orthodontic services such as braces are not currently available under CDCP.

How do I apply for CDCP?

You apply through the Government of Canada at canada.ca/dental. To qualify you need to have no access to dental insurance, an adjusted family net income under $90,000, and you (and your spouse or partner) must have filed your taxes in Canada and be Canadian residents for tax purposes.

What should I bring to my first visit?

Your CDCP member card or member ID, a list of any medicines you take, and details of any other dental coverage you have, such as a government program.
